IBM's Strategic Partnership with Microsoft and the Launch of Apptio portfolio on the Azure Marketplace

IBM and Microsoft have an established and successful strategic partnership, marked by significant collaborations like ARO (Azure Red Hat OpenShift). In 2021, the general availability of Red Hat OpenShift on Azure evolved into Azure Managed OpenShift on Azure. In 2023, IBM achieved Partner of the Year recognition with over 13 accreditations across the Microsoft portfolio and seven in 2024.

ARO has been a cornerstone of this partnership, offering businesses a comprehensive hybrid cloud solution that seamlessly integrates Azure services with Red Hat OpenShift. This partnership has also driven IBM’s expansion on the Azure cloud marketplace, where IBM’s technology offerings have gained substantial traction.

In a significant initiative to enhance their long-standing relationship, IBM and Microsoft are expanding the partnership by bringing additional IBM solutions to businesses through the Azure Marketplace. This strategic move aims to provide businesses with a more streamlined and integrated experience, allowing them to access a broader range of IBM software and services directly within the Azure ecosystem.

Both IBM and Microsoft stand to benefit from this partnership, as Techaisle’s research indicates a growing momentum towards Azure Marketplace. 47% of businesses consider it to be secure, 45% find it well-understood, 44% utilize it due to its extensive footprint, and 41% perceive it as a mature platform. These positive perceptions highlight Azure Marketplace’s increasing appeal to businesses seeking reliable, comprehensive cloud solutions.

Expanding IBM's Offerings on Azure Marketplace: A Strategic Partnership

There are few absolute certainties in technology – but one subject that is beyond debate is that the cloud has permanently changed how technology is deployed and consumed within businesses, and AI is the latest disruptive technology. We know that AI is everywhere, but having arrived in a hurry, the changes made in response to its adoption will not leave abruptly.

Techaisle research shows that 72% of SMBs, 97% of midmarket firms, and 100% of enterprises believe technology is critical to business success. However, IT efficiency can be challenging to achieve. As the business pressures increase, the greater is the need for automation and orchestration. Business unit leaders seek inputs from IT to help achieve business goals. In straightforward terms, in 86% of firms, IT is expected to do more and is even seen as a source of innovation. In 79% of firms, IT is expected to deliver business outcomes faster. However, 80% of IT’s time is spent on support and maintenance; in 65% of organizations, IT is left with little time for innovation.

One of the key highlights of this expanded partnership is the introduction of Apptio Technology Business Management (TBM) software to the Azure Marketplace. Apptio, an IBM company, is recognized as a market leader in TBM and FinOps. It empowers organizations to make data-driven technology investment decisions and optimize costs across cloud and on-premise environments.

The roll-out of Apptio's product suite on Azure Marketplace will occur in phases, beginning with IBM Targetprocess on October 29th, 2024. Targetprocess is an Enterprise Agile Planning (EAP) software that integrates with Azure DevOps, facilitating better budget planning and management across diverse technology environments. IBM also plans to bring its flagship IT financial management solution, IBM Apptio Costing and Planning, to the Azure Marketplace in the first quarter of 2025. These initiatives highlight a commitment from both IBM and Microsoft to provide businesses with a comprehensive suite of solutions to manage and optimize their technology investments within the Azure cloud platform.

AI PCs Poised for Takeoff in SMB and Midmarket Segments, But Snapdragon Faces Hurdles

A new type of computer is gaining traction: the Artificial Intelligence-powered PC, or AI PC for short.  At Microsoft Build 2024, Microsoft and its leading PC partners, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, unveiled a new class of laptops, Copilot+ PCs, explicitly built for artificial intelligence (AI).  These laptops are powered by powerful Snapdragon® X Plus processors, exceeding 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), and deliver long-lasting battery life and access to cutting-edge AI models.

The personal computer market is undergoing a significant shift, and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and upper midmarket companies are paying close attention.  A recent study by Techaisle, covering 1410 SMBs and Midmarket firms in the US, suggests a potential surge in demand for these innovative machines within these business sectors.

High Awareness Paves the Way for Adoption

The study reveals a high level of awareness and purchase intention among SMBs and midmarket firms, painting a promising picture of the market potential of AI PCs. A significant 77% of SMBs and an impressive 86% of upper midmarket firms are already familiar with AI PCs, demonstrating a high level of awareness and understanding of the potential benefits of AI technology for their productivity and operations. This awareness is not just passive, as the study reveals that a substantial 32% of SMBs and a much higher 64% of midmarket firms are actively planning to purchase AI PCs, indicating a strong market potential and the confidence these businesses have in the technology. This robust purchase intention signals a significant market shift and underscores the potential for widespread adoption in the near future. Moreover, 40% of SMBs are considering evaluating AI PCs before making a purchase decision, hinting at the possibility of even broader adoption in the coming years.

AI PCs are projected to dent the PC market within 3-5 years substantially. SMBs, known for their agility in responding to market trends, will likely mirror this trend. With 54% of SMBs planning to invest in new PCs in the next 12 months, AI PCs could become a decisive factor in purchasing decisions.

The study also uncovers some intriguing insights into SMB priorities. While 14% of SMBs view AI PCs as a crucial upgrade, and another 12% are considering a strategic shift towards them, a substantial portion (24%) see no compelling reason to adopt this new technology. However, 58% of SMBs report that their employees are actively requesting AI PCs. This highlights a potential disparity between management and employees regarding the perceived benefits of AI technology, suggesting the need for better communication and alignment.

The study identifies potential early adopters of AI PCs within the employee base. These are the content creators, tech-savvy departments, and executives in corner offices. Creative and design professionals top the list (45%), followed by IT development (27%) and sales and marketing teams (26%). These departments will likely benefit most from AI PCs' enhanced processing power and AI-powered features.

Copilot Gains Traction, But Snapdragon Faces Recognition Hurdle

The Techaisle study delves deeper, exploring the potential for Copilot, a new software solution designed to unlock the true power of AI PCs. Awareness is high, with over half (54%) of SMBs and a staggering majority (89%) of upper midmarket firms recognizing the name.  Despite its recent launch, nearly half of these businesses already know about Copilot+ PCs.

However, adoption intent dips regarding Copilot+ PCs powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors. This hesitation stems from a few key factors. Limited brand awareness compared to the established giant Intel is a significant hurdle. Concerns about compatibility with existing applications and potential issues with peripherals further dampen enthusiasm. Many SMBs are adopting a wait-and-see approach, holding out for the announcement of Intel-based Copilot+ PCs, hoping these systems will offer similar features and impressive battery life.

Despite the growing hype around AI PCs, the study reveals some interesting realities regarding PC selection criteria for SMBs. While GPU/NPU might be a consideration, it does not reign supreme. For SMBs, the top five priorities when choosing a PC remain long battery life, a processor with built-in security features, ample storage capacity, a high-resolution display, and biometric login options.

Data shows Microsoft Cloud PC may see acceptance within SMB and Midmarket firms

Straight after Windows 11, Microsoft announced a new service that allows business users to access cloud PC from anywhere. Microsoft Cloud PC, Windows 365 will be available from August 2, 2021, for businesses of all sizes. Any modern browser can be the desktop environment, and any device can be the workspace. As per Microsoft - Windows 365 is a cloud service that introduces a new way to experience Windows 10 or Windows 11 (when it’s generally available later this calendar year) for workers from interns and contractors to software developers and industrial designers. Windows 365 takes the operating system to the Microsoft Cloud, securely streaming the full Windows experience—including all apps, data, and settings—to personal or corporate devices. This approach creates an entirely new personal computing category, specifically for the hybrid world: the Cloud PC.

Techaisle data suggests that SMB and midmarket buyers will appreciate its portability, native access to web-based resources, its innovative approach to security, access to Microsoft Office personal productivity solutions, namely M365, and the ability to add to Azure Active Directory. Data from a survey conducted by Techaisle in the US shows that 5% of very small businesses, 10% of small businesses, 16% of core midmarket firms, and 32% of upper midmarket organizations may adopt Cloud PC. These are fascinating data points, which may well change with additional information and user experiences. Information/Media and Professional business services verticals have shown a higher intent for adoption than other verticals.
